International Women Riders Congress and FestivalAugust 11 - 15, 2010 - Deerhurst Resort, Huntsville Ontario CanadaSeminar: Group RidingSponsored by Humber College
Maximum 7 Riders per groupWhen riding in a group... there are two primary factors to consider. Communication and Organization.A group should always be able to communicate with each other. Right from the lead rider through the pack to the designated sweep. Communication can be done electronically through CB, FRS or GMRS radios or by way of hand signals. There are many variations on what specific hand movements or gesture mean and what action the group should follow. The answer is really quite simple: Whatever the group has pre-determined in its pre-ride riders meeting. As long as the group has engaged in communication before the ride - communication during the ride will be consistent and understood by all. Organization can refer to the dynamic of the group where the mix consists of experience, motorcycle style and preference. The lead and sweep riders should be experienced. These riders are able to concentrate on their own personal safety as well as keep tabs on the rest of the riders. The lead will set the pace and be responsible for knowing the range of the lowest distance based on fuel and the personal comfort for longevity of the individual riders. Ideally, the least experienced riders should be positioned near the front directly behind the lead. All riders must ride in stagger formation with a 2 second gap between them and the rider in the same tire track directly ahead. The stagger comes from the alternate tire track where riders are gaped one second from there other tire track counter parts. Group riding should be fun and group minded. It's the sum of the whole that makes the experience the best for the individuals involved.
